Out of Focus | Our Location Guide to Marlborough

Marlborough is one of those towns whose many charms creep up on you. It looks, at first glance, like a handsome English market town with its wide High Street, good pubs and independent shops, and it is, but spend a bit of time here and you start to notice the layers: ancient woodland on the doorstep, racehorses on the downs at dawn, a record shop tucked off the main drag that quietly hosts some of the best intimate gigs in the country. There's a lot going on in Marlborough, and most of it doesn't shout about itself.

Our store sits on the High Street, right in the thick of things. Here's everything we've found to love about Marlborough,  from the bakehouse five minutes up the road to the forest you could lose yourself in for an entire afternoon.

GETTING HERE & PARKING

Marlborough's High Street is one of the widest in England, which makes it feel generous and unhurried in a way that a lot of market towns don't. Parking is straightforward once you know the options.

On the High Street itself there are paid bays in the centre (2 hours, £2) and free 30-minute bays on the sides, both under a minute's walk from the store. For longer stays, The Parade (free for 2 hours) is a better bet.

One thing worth knowing: parking is free across the board on Sundays. If you're planning a longer visit, that's your day.

COFFEE & BREAKFAST

Bunce's Bakehouse — High Street (far end, near Marlborough College)

Five minutes up the High Street and worth every step. Bunce's is the best coffee spot in Marlborough, full stop. It sells outstanding sausage rolls, cinnamon buns, and coffee that sets you up for the whole day. One important detail: always ask for the caramelised onion ketchup. It sounds like a small thing. It is not a small thing.

Coffi Lab — High Street (end, by the town hall)

A big, airy, dog-friendly coffee shop at the other end of the High Street. Great coffee and a welcoming atmosphere- the kind of place that's easy to stay in longer than you planned!

Perfect for: Coffee with your dog, a longer sit-down, or somewhere to work for an hour.

BREAKFAST & BRUNCH

Bunce's — High Street

Back to Bunce’s for the best breakfast in Marlborough. The Turkish eggs are exceptional. The spicy chicken sandwich is exceptional. The Benedict Hash is exceptional. The hash browns are -you guessed it -exceptional. Exceptional staff too. Go early or be prepared to queue.

Must try: Turkish eggs, spicy chicken sandwich, Benedict Hash. Caramelised onion ketchup. Always.

The Food Gallery — High Street

A solid local option for a proper breakfast or brunch. The specials change, so ask the staff what's on — they usually know what's worth ordering that day.

LUNCH

Dan's at The Crown — The Parade

A pub lunch done properly. Dan's is two minutes from the store and delivers exactly what it promises: good British pub food in a genuine pub setting. The Sunday roast is one of the best in town, but the midweek lunch menu holds its own too.

Krumbz Café — Kennet Place

A relaxed little café tucked just off the High Street. Relaxed, good value, and a nice change of pace from the main drag. The kind of place you're glad you found.

Helen Browning's Royal Oak — Bishopstone (15 min drive towards the M4)

This one requires a short drive- about 15 minutes towards Swindon, roughly halfway between Marlborough and the M4 -but it is absolutely worth it. Farm-to-table British cooking at its best, on a working organic farm in the Wiltshire Downs. The best lunch destination within reach of Marlborough, and genuinely one of the finest pubs in the country. Factor in extra time, because you won't want to leave quickly. Top tip: book ahead!

BAKERIES, BUTCHERS & PICNIC SUPPLIES

Marlborough has two excellent independent butchers within two minutes of the store, which tells you something about the town.

Sumbler Brothers Butchers — London Road

Top-quality local butcher with an excellent deli counter. Deli meats, charcuterie, and the kind of produce that makes a picnic worth the effort.

Andrews Quality Meats — High Street

Another excellent local butcher, also right on the doorstep. Great quality deli counter and a brilliant range. If you're heading out to Savernake or the Downs, pick up provisions here first.

Marlborough Market runs on Wednesdays (smaller) and Saturdays (main market), running the full length of the High Street — fresh produce, local traders, street food. It's right on your doorstep, and Saturday morning before a walk is a very good combination.

DINNER

La Bobina — High Street (church end)

A gem at the church end of the High Street, and one of Marlborough's best evenings out. Spanish tapas done well — relaxed atmosphere, sharing plates, specials worth asking about. The kind of place that works for a group as well as it does for two.

Pino's — New Road

Family-run, genuinely authentic Italian — the real thing. Specials are consistently worth ordering over the menu, so ask when you arrive. One of those restaurants that's been here long enough to know exactly what it's doing.

The Horseshoe — Mildenhall (5 min drive)

Another lovely pub a short drive out of town in the village of Mildenhall, towards Ramsbury. A proper dinner destination — worth booking, worth the short drive, and particularly good for a Sunday lunch if you're still in the area.

DRINKS & PUBS

The Tap — Old Hughenden Yard

The best draught beer in Marlborough, tucked into a yard just off the High Street. No-frills, no pretension — just really good pints and a room full of people enjoying them. If you're after craft beer or something interesting on tap, this is your place. Dog-friendly too.

Vibe: Tucked away, no-frills, great beer. A proper find.

The Marlborough — High Street

One of the best pubs in Marlborough for an evening pint. Classic and welcoming, with a local crowd and a pub that knows what it's for.

Best for: Evening drinks, a classic pub atmosphere.

WALKS & OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Savernake Forest — 5 min drive

Ancient woodland a five-minute drive from the store, and one of those places that lives up to its reputation. Thousands of years of heritage, miles of paths, and a quiet that's hard to find anywhere closer to a town. Park anywhere in the forest and walk for as long as you like-the trees do the rest.

Manton Downs — 5 min drive

Open downland where racehorses train in the early mornings. Wide skies, sweeping views, and a sense of space that's hard to explain until you're standing in it. Come early if you want to watch the horses work- it's one of the quiet privileges of being near Marlborough.

Ramsbury area — 10 min drive

Lovely walks through the surrounding villages and farmland to the east of Marlborough. A quieter option if you want to get away from the well-trodden routes.

HIDDEN GEMS & INSIDER TIPS

Sound Knowledge Record Store — off the High Street

Tucked away down a yard off the High Street and run by Roger, who really knows his records. Sound Knowledge also quietly hosts some of the best intimate gigs in the country: Ed Sheeran, Tom Odell, and others have played to around 200 people in this small, private setting. Keep an eye on what's coming. This one is worth going out of your way for.

Marlborough's charity shops are also worth a browse — the town is wealthy and the donations reflect it. Genuinely good finds if you take the time to look.

And finally: if you're here on a Sunday, parking is free across town. That's not a hidden gem so much as a gift. Use it.

We're always discovering new things to love about Marlborough — we'll keep updating this guide as we do. If you've got a recommendation we've missed, find us in store or drop us a message.
